Event Details

Take a stroll down SW 12th Avenue with Cascadia and Portland Bureau of Environmental Services to check out storm water systems in the urban core. The tour will start at the Hamilton West Ecoroof.  Built in 1999, the Hamilton West ecoroof was the City’s first large-scale ecoroof demonstration and monitoring facility to evaluate reduction of stormwater peak flows and volume control, which helps alleviate Portland’s combined sewer overflows.

The tour will continue with a short walk to Epler Hall at Portland State University where we will discuss storm water features including the public plaza and planter boxes. More than half of the rainfall from Stephen Epler Hall and adjacent King Albert Hall is harvested using this system, reducing total stormwater from the site by 25% and supplying 100% of on-site drip irrigation for the landscape.

The tour will wrap up at SW 12th Avenue to discuss the SW 12th Avenue Green Street Project between SW Montgomery and SW Mill. The Green Street Project converted an underused landscape area between the sidewalk and street curb into a series of landscaped stormwater planters that capture, slow, cleanse, and infiltrate street runoff.
